Often their choice is postponed for a while, although window decor is very important for creating a cozy atmosphere in the house, not only in a new apartment. How to choose the right curtains?

The main rules when choosing curtains

Just as the tone of makeup hides flaws and highlights the beauty of your face, curtain fabric can transform your window. And here there can be no trifles, everything is important: the size of the window, and its location, and the height of the ceiling, and the interior of the apartment. For example, contrasting fabrics with transverse stripes visually “expand” the walls. With vertical stripes, on the contrary, they make the walls “higher”. Cold blues and grays visually cool the room, while warm reds and terracotta warm. Colorful curtains, although they will be a bright spot in your interior at first, can quickly get bored, despite their brightness.

In order for the curtains to be combined with the wallpaper, it is worth remembering the following rule: the curtains should be lighter or, on the contrary, darker than the walls. By the way, the color should also be combined with furniture upholstery, especially since furniture, as a rule, is bought for more than one year. As for the texture of the fabric, in this case, furniture, bedspreads, pillow covers should serve as the main guidelines for choosing.

In addition, it is useful to remember that plain fabrics without a pattern harmonize better with surrounding objects. Their virtues are embodied in color and texture. If fabric with a pattern is dearer to your heart, then you need to carefully choose not only the color of the curtains, but also the theme and size of the pattern - all this should be associated with the design of furniture and carpet ornaments.

If the apartment is small, then you should not experiment with a variety of colors and textures. This may look rather vulgar. It is necessary to choose the dominant fabric with which all other materials will be in harmony. At the same time, individual fabrics may not be combined with the main one, complementing the decor with various accents.

Equally important is the selection of curtains or curtains. If your apartment has high ceilings and large window openings, then you should use long curtains with gathers. If you are tempted by such an offer, then remember that the number of curtains is not limited, the main thing is that they be made of light translucent fabric and only one of them (night) is made of dense. When combining light and heavy canvases, two principles must act - harmony and contrast.

You can make original curtains simply by connecting multi-colored squares from the same fabric together. Such curtains are attached to the cornice with rings and clips. Keep in mind that the density of the fabric and squares should be the same. Only then will your original curtains look harmonious in the interior of the apartment, being a design element. Another way to make your window original: decorate old curtains with appliqués to match the color of the wallpaper. Keep in mind that this option is possible if the old curtains and wallpaper are not made in the same color.

If you decide to purchase new curtains, then you do not need such advice. After all, a huge variety of original models is now presented on the curtain market. Therefore, you don’t even need to decorate them: just lower the curtains on the floor. A variant of “French” curtains is also possible, when the width of the canvas is one and a half of the width of the window, and the length is twice its height. Such curtains are collected in undulating folds and “broken” with cords into sections.

Deciding on style and color

Among artificial materials, polyester and viscose are in the lead, in which linen and cotton can be added. All sorts of embroidery and metal threads look very good. Linen curtains with the addition of lavsan also look good. Curtains should be treated with a special dust-repellent impregnation, it is resistant to fading in the sun, to washing. Unfortunately, the better the material of the curtains, the more expensive they are, you can’t get away from this.
